Mardai Mine Area Environmental Disturbance Survey for Emeelt Mines Co.,/Western Prospector Inc., Canada, 2005-2006

At the request of Western Prospector Mongolia LLC/Emeelt Mines LLC, the owner of Gurvanbulag licenses area (4969Х, 4970Х, 6995Х, 7685Х) near border of three soums Bayandun soum, Sergelen and Dashbalbar in Dornod aimag, Mongolia, this Environmental disturbance survey report has been completed to describe the existing environmental disturbance conditions in these areas. The aims of this survey was to determine environmental disturbances in these areas that formed during geological exploration and construction of mine infrastructure and its related facilities carried out by geological institutes of former USSR, 1972 to mid 1990’s. Although, it’s important to create required information database of the existing condition of environmental disturbances, which can be used in various ways for further detailed environmental impact assessment and to deal with other related aspects.

These areas were badly affected by geological activities carried out by Sosnov geological expedition which was coordinated by Erhuu city of former USSR. There are 113 disturbed points have been recorded and measured for the existing radiation level; and corroborated by photos taken at each points.

Since 2002, local people or people from other soums of Dornod aimag came to the mine area and destroyed and plundered Gurvanbulag mine and its facilities, which had been kept at good condition until this time after that Russians left the mine.

In the frame of environmental disturbance survey carried out in June 2006, excavations of geological exploration within about 2350 ha area, including ditches, sumps, drill holes and dumps with size varying between 0.5 m and 3 m have been detected and such geological exploration activities were intensively focused on approximately 8 km by 6 km area.
